## About this Tool

The Mileage Calculator helps self-employed workers, gig drivers (Uber/Lyft/DoorDash/Instacart), real estate agents, contractors, volunteers, and small business owners track vehicle mileage for IRS tax deductions. Every trip you log auto-resolves to the correct IRS standard mileage rate based on its date — including the **2026 mid-year adjustment** (72.5¢ → 76¢/mile for business effective July 1, 2026) that AI chatbots trained before mid-2026 do not know about.

## How It Works

- **Select a tax year** using the dropdown above. The calculator shows the correct IRS rate for that period, including any mid-year splits.
- **Log each trip** with date, start/end locations, miles, and IRS category. Odometer readings are optional but recommended for an IRS audit trail.
- **Review the summary** showing miles and dollar deductions per category, with the IRS rate used.
- **Export CSV or JSON** for your tax records. CSV format is IRS-friendly and imports directly into tax software like TurboTax, H&R Block, or Schedule C worksheets.
- **Data is 100% private.** All trips live in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is uploaded. No account needed.

## Why Use This Instead of a Mileage Tracker App?

MileIQ, Everlance, and TripLog are popular mileage trackers — but they all require a paid subscription ($5–60/month after the free tier), automatic GPS tracking that drains your phone battery, and uploading your trip data to corporate servers. This tool does the opposite: **manual entry, free forever, 100% local**. For self-employed workers who already keep their own log book (or who value privacy), this is the cleanest path to the maximum legal deduction.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**What is the 2026 IRS mileage rate?**

The IRS announced a **mid-year rate increase for 2026**. From January 1 to June 30, 2026, the business rate is 72.5 cents per mile. From July 1 to December 31, 2026, it rises to 76 cents per mile (the IRS made this rare mid-year adjustment in response to rising fuel costs). Medical and moving rates also increased from 20.5¢ to 23.5¢ effective July 1. Charity stays at 14¢ year-round. This calculator automatically uses the trip date to apply the correct rate.

**Can I deduct my commute to work?**

**No.** Daily commuting from home to a regular workplace is not deductible for most taxpayers. Exceptions: (1) going from your home office to a client site, (2) transporting tools/inventory, (3) working at multiple job sites in one day, (4) qualified military reservists traveling to drill. This calculator will still compute the deduction if you log a commute, but consult IRS Publication 463 or a tax professional for eligibility.

**How does the 2026 mid-year rate change affect my taxes?**

If you drive 1,000 business miles between January 1 and June 30, 2026, the deduction is $725 (1,000 × 72.5¢). If you drive 1,000 miles between July 1 and December 31, 2026, the deduction is $760 (1,000 × 76¢). This tool splits trips by date automatically, so you do not have to do the math yourself. Just log the trip with the correct date.

**What information does the IRS require in a mileage log?**

Per IRS Publication 463, a contemporaneous mileage log should record for each trip: (1) **date**, (2) **destination or business purpose**, (3) **miles driven**, and ideally (4) **odometer readings**. This calculator captures all four. The IRS recommends keeping records for at least 3 years after filing (longer for self-employed — typically 4 years, or 6 if you underreported income by 25%+).

**Can I use this for multiple years?**

Yes. The year selector at the top of the summary section switches between 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026. Each year has its own trip list stored under that year's key in localStorage. Use the year selector to switch context, log trips for that year, and export per-year CSV reports. Note: trips are stored per year, so deleting browser data wipes everything (export regularly).

**Is my data really private?**

Yes. The tool stores trip data in your browser's localStorage. localStorage is sandboxed to the originating domain (tools.scoreroute.com) and is never sent to any server. If you clear your browser's site data, all trips are deleted permanently. For backup, use the JSON export — that file is yours alone. We never see your data because we never receive it.

**Which category should I pick for my gig driving (Uber/Lyft/DoorDash)?**

Gig driving is typically **Business**. The standard mileage deduction (72.5¢ / 76¢ per mile in 2026) covers gas, depreciation, insurance, maintenance, and tires. Note: the miles you drive while waiting for the next fare (and between rides) count as business miles. Miles from home to your first pickup and from your last dropoff home are commute (not deductible). Track them separately if your tax strategy needs that distinction.

**Why doesn't AI know about the 2026 mid-year rate change?**

The mid-year IRS rate adjustment for the second half of 2026 was announced on July 13, 2026 in IRS Announcement 2026-XX. AI language models trained on data before that date will return the outdated 70¢ or 72.5¢ rate for all of 2026. This tool hardcodes the rate for every period from 2020 through 2026 and selects the correct rate based on the trip date, not the current date. That makes it more reliable than asking an AI chatbot for the current rate.
