## Compare Two PDFs Side-by-Side or as Text Diff

Drop two PDFs, pick a view mode, and instantly see every change. Side-by-side mode renders both pages with synchronized scrolling for visual layout comparison. Text diff mode highlights added (green) and removed (red) lines per page using the Myers diff algorithm. 100% client-side, no upload, no signup.

## Why PDF Comparison Matters

Comparing two versions of a PDF is a daily task across law, finance, academia, software, and operations. Lawyers redline contracts clause by clause. Accountants diff quarterly statements to spot footnote changes. Editors review manuscript revisions across dozens of drafts. Engineers trace spec changes between software releases. Auditors verify regulatory filings against prior versions. The cost of missing a single paragraph-level change can be enormous: a $50M contract clause, a missing compliance disclosure, a regression in a regulatory filing. Yet most comparison tools either charge a subscription, require an account, upload your confidential document to a third-party server, or run only on one operating system.

This tool runs the entire comparison pipeline locally. Drag two PDFs, pick side-by-side or text diff mode, and the differences appear instantly with no upload and no tracking. The exported comparison report is a real PDF annotated with green-highlighted additions and red-strikethrough deletions, ready to email or attach.

## How Side-by-Side Mode Works

Side-by-side mode renders both PDFs to canvases using pdfjs-dist at your chosen zoom level. Each panel is independently scrollable but the page selector at the top keeps both panels on the same page number, so you never lose alignment while scanning. The renderer uses the PDF's native font and layout so text positioning, image placement, headers, footers, and page numbers appear exactly as in the source. For visual layout comparison - checking if a logo moved, if a table grew, if margins changed - this is the fastest mode. Both panels update together when you click next or previous page.

## How Text Diff Mode Works

Text diff mode extracts the text layer from each page using pdfjs-dist's getTextContent API, splits the text into lines, and computes a Myers diff between the two line arrays. The Myers algorithm finds the longest common subsequence and reports insertions, deletions, and equal segments. We render additions with a green left border, deletions with a red left border and strikethrough, and unchanged lines in muted grey. A summary bar at the top shows the count of added and removed lines for the current page. The Jump-to-Next-Diff buttons let you click through every page with differences without manually scanning.

## Choosing Between Modes

Use **side-by-side** when visual layout matters: contracts with redlines visible as crossed-out text, invoices with reordered line items, brochures with image changes, forms with new fields. The eye spots layout shifts, color changes, font swaps, and image swaps much faster than reading text diffs.

Use **text diff** when only the words matter: code documentation revisions, policy documents, legal text where every word is weighted, articles and manuscripts. Text diff collapses formatting noise so you see only what was added, removed, or kept verbatim. It also handles scanned PDFs poorly (no text layer to extract), so use side-by-side for those.

## Common Pitfalls

The most common pitfall is comparing two PDFs that look identical at the byte level but differ visually - this happens when the PDF includes a creation timestamp in the metadata, font subset IDs that change on every export, or image compression that varies slightly between saves. The tool will report zero text diff (correct, because the words are identical) but the page renders will differ. Side-by-side mode catches these cases because it compares pixels, not text.

The second pitfall is scanned PDFs without text layers. Text diff mode returns empty results because pdfjs-dist cannot extract text that does not exist. For those documents, run our PDF OCR tool first to add a searchable text layer, then come back to compare.

The third pitfall is large multi-page documents (over 200 pages). The diff view computes per-page so memory usage stays bounded, but the export report can grow large. For very large comparisons, use the page selector to scope to a specific section rather than building a full report.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Is PDF compare really free with no limits?**

Yes. Draftable charges $25/month and requires signup, Adobe Acrobat Pro costs $24.99/month, Diffchecker requires a paid subscription, and most desktop tools (PDF XChange, Bluebeam, WinMerge) are Windows-only or paid. Our tool is unlimited and free forever with no signup and no watermark. You can compare as many PDFs as your browser memory allows.

**Does my PDF get uploaded to a server?**

No. Both PDFs are processed entirely in your browser using pdfjs-dist (for rendering and text extraction) and pdf-lib (for generating the comparison report PDF). Your documents never touch a server, an API, or any third party. Open DevTools (F12) and watch the Network tab - the only requests are to load the JavaScript libraries from the CDN. Your file content never travels.

**What is the difference between side-by-side and text diff mode?**

Side-by-side mode renders both PDFs as images so you can visually compare layouts, images, and formatting changes. Scroll sync keeps both panels aligned as you scroll. Text diff mode extracts the text content of each page and computes a line-level diff using the Myers algorithm, highlighting added lines in green and removed lines in red, with a summary count per page. Use side-by-side for visual layout comparison (contracts, invoices, brochures) and text diff for content-only comparison (manuscripts, code docs, articles).

**Can I compare a scanned PDF without a text layer?**

Yes, but with limitations. Side-by-side visual mode works perfectly for scanned PDFs because it compares pixel images. Text diff mode requires selectable text - if a PDF has no text layer (a scanned image), the text extraction will return empty. For scanned PDFs, use the side-by-side visual mode, or run our PDF OCR tool first to add a text layer.

**What does the comparison report contain?**

The exported PDF report contains a cover page summarizing the differences (total added/removed/modified line counts), then one page per document pair showing the side-by-side comparison with additions highlighted in green and deletions highlighted in red. The original visual appearance of both PDFs is preserved in the background. The report is built using pdf-lib entirely in your browser.

**Why can't AI chatbots compare PDFs?**

Large language models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini process text tokens, not binary PDFs. When you give a chatbot a PDF, it converts the text to tokens but loses the visual layout, font positions, image placement, and pagination. The chatbot cannot perform pixel-level visual diff, cannot compute a synchronized scroll between two document views, cannot generate a valid annotated PDF with diff highlights at correct coordinates, and cannot preserve multi-page document structure. Vision-capable models can describe what they see in a single page but cannot render two documents side-by-side with linked scrolling or compute character-level diff across hundreds of pages. Our tool runs the actual pdfjs rendering pipeline plus a Myers diff algorithm plus the pdf-lib PDF writer inside the browser, producing a real annotated comparison report that AI chatbots cannot produce on their own.

**How accurate is the text diff?**

Text diff is computed per page using the Myers diff algorithm (the same algorithm used by Git for source code diffs). The algorithm finds the longest common subsequence between two strings and reports insertions, deletions, and equal segments. Per-line grouping uses the PDF text Y-coordinate to cluster items into visual lines, so layout-preserving changes (a paragraph moves to the next page but text is unchanged) will still appear as removed + added because the algorithm operates on per-page text blocks.

**Is this suitable for legal, financial, and academic documents?**

Yes. The tool is widely used for legal contract redline comparison, financial statement version review, academic manuscript revisions, software documentation diffs, and regulatory filing comparisons. Because everything runs locally, confidential documents never leave your machine. The comparison report is a standard PDF that can be printed, emailed, or attached to legal discovery. For court-admissible redline comparisons requiring certified audit trails, please consult a regulated e-signature service.

## Why AI Chatbots Fall Short

Large language models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini process text tokens, not binary PDFs. When given a PDF, a chatbot converts the visible text to tokens but loses the visual layout, font positions, image placement, page breaks, and pagination metadata. It cannot perform pixel-level visual diff. It cannot compute a synchronized scroll between two document views. It cannot generate a valid annotated PDF with diff highlights at correct coordinates. It cannot preserve multi-page document structure when outputting a comparison report. Vision-capable models can describe what they see in a single page image but cannot render two documents side-by-side with linked scrolling or compute character-level diff across hundreds of pages. Some chatbots can produce a textual summary of differences, but that summary is a paraphrase that may miss subtle wording changes and adds interpretation that does not belong in a redline comparison.

This tool runs the actual pdfjs-dist rendering pipeline for visual mode, the Myers diff algorithm for text mode, and the pdf-lib PDF writer for export - all inside the browser. It produces a real annotated comparison report that AI chatbots cannot produce on their own.

## Technical Details

This tool chains three client-side libraries without any server round trip:

- [pdfjs-dist](https://mozilla.github.io/pdf.js/) parses both PDFs, walks each page tree, renders pages to canvases for visual mode, and extracts text content per page for diff mode.
- [pdf-lib](https://pdf-lib.js.org/) builds the optional comparison report PDF, embedding the original PDF pages as visual layers and overlaying diff annotations at correct coordinates.
- The Myers diff algorithm runs inline in JavaScript to compute line-level differences between page text arrays - the same algorithm used by Git for source code diffs.
