### How do I calculate roof area from house footprint?

Multiply the house footprint length by width to get the base area. Multiply that base area by the pitch multiplier for your roof pitch. A 6/12 pitch has a 1.118 multiplier, so a 40 ft by 30 ft footprint (1,200 sq ft) becomes 1,341 sq ft of true roof area. Add eave overhang, then add waste factor (typically 10%). The pitch multiplier converts flat footprint area to sloped roof area using Pythagoras. The multiplier is the hypotenuse of a triangle with one leg equal to the run (12) and the other leg equal to the rise. For 4/12 pitch the multiplier is 1.054, for 6/12 it is 1.118, for 9/12 it is 1.250, for 12/12 it is 1.414. AI chatbots usually get the math wrong because they linearise the slope or skip the Pythagoras step.


### How many shingle bundles per roofing square?

Standard 3-tab asphalt shingle: 3 bundles per square (100 sq ft). Architectural or dimensional asphalt shingle: 4 bundles per square because each bundle covers less area. Wood shake: 5 bundles per square. Clay or concrete tile: 3 tiles per square for typical Spanish S tile but varies by profile. This calculator switches the per-square count automatically when you change the material dropdown.


### How much extra material does a hip roof need?

A hip roof has two extra hip lines and shorter ridges, which adds waste from cutting. Industry rule is to add 10 to 15 percent material beyond the gable roof count for cut waste. This calculator adds 12 percent automatically when you select Hip and 5 percent for Gable. You can override the waste factor manually if your roof has dormers or valleys.


### How many squares is my roof?

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. A 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares. Bundle count = squares times bundles-per-square for your material. Three-tab asphalt at 20 squares needs 60 bundles. Architectural at 20 squares needs 80 bundles. This calculator shows the square count and bundle count side by side so you can sanity-check both numbers.


### How much underlayment do I need?

Synthetic underlayment rolls typically cover 400 sq ft with overlap. Divide your true roof area by 400 then add 10 percent for overlap and starter edge. Felt underlayment (#30) covers about 200 sq ft per roll so the count is roughly double. This calculator uses 400 sq ft per roll as the default which matches modern GAF, Owens Corning and Tyvek specs.


### How much ridge cap do I need?

Ridge cap runs along the peak. For a gable roof the ridge length equals the length of the house. For a hip roof add the ridge plus both hip lengths. Each bundle of ridge cap shingle covers about 33 linear feet. This calculator shows the total linear feet of ridge cap and recommends bundles. Most contractors add 10 percent extra for cuts at the hip ends.


### How much drip edge do I need?

Drip edge runs along the eave (lower edge) and rake (sloped side) of the roof. For a gable roof the linear feet is the perimeter of the house (2 times length plus 2 times width). For a hip roof add the hip lengths as well. Drip edge comes in 10 ft sticks. This calculator outputs the total linear feet of drip edge so you can divide by 10 and round up to whole sticks.
