How the Anime Algorithm Works
For each pixel, the algorithm performs a four-stage pipeline:
- Color quantization — reduces the photo to a small palette (3 to 32 colors) using a k-means clustering on the RGB values. This produces flat color regions instead of continuous gradients, the hallmark of anime artwork.
- Cel-shading — thresholds brightness into discrete bands (typically 3 levels: shadow, midtone, highlight) so each color region has a stepped tonal range rather than smooth shading.
- Sobel edge detection — finds sharp color boundaries in the original image and converts them into dark outline strokes, giving the characteristic "ink line" look of anime art.
- Edge compositing — combines the cel-shaded quantized image with the outline map, using the outline as a dark overlay on the quantized colors.
