How Age Is Calculated
This age calculator computes the elapsed time between your date of birth and today using the standard Gregorian calendar rules. The exact-years, exact-months, and exact-days fields account for the unequal length of calendar months, while the total-days, total-weeks, total-hours, total-minutes, and total-seconds counters are computed from the millisecond difference between the two dates divided by the corresponding unit. Leap years (years divisible by 4, except centuries not divisible by 400) add a February 29 day every four years and are handled automatically, so February 29 birthdays always show a correct age on non-leap years as well.
The birthday countdown shows the time remaining until your next occurrence of your birth month and day. If today is on or after this year's occurrence, the calculator advances the target by one full year. The milestone tracker predicts the date you will reach round-number thresholds such as 10,000 days (about 27.4 years), 20,000 days, 36,500 days (100 years), 500,000 hours, and 1,000,000 minutes. These milestones are useful for personal tracking, social-media posts, and life-event planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does this age calculator handle leap year birthdays (Feb 29)?
If you were born on February 29, the calculator treats March 1 as the rollover date in non-leap years, so your exact age still increases by exactly one day each calendar year. Your next-birthday countdown on a non-leap year will show 365 days instead of 366, matching what most legal and medical systems use for leap-day birthdays.
Does the calculator work in all time zones?
Yes. The calculation uses your device's local time zone and the JavaScript Date object, so entering your birth date as recorded on your birth certificate gives the correct elapsed time wherever you are. If you travel across time zones on your birthday, the total-hours and total-minutes counters will reflect local-clock elapsed time, not absolute UTC time.
How accurate is the seconds counter over long lifespans?
The seconds counter is accurate to within one second of your device clock at the moment you click Calculate. Because it computes the millisecond difference between two Date objects, drift is sub-second. For users over 100 years old the result remains exact, but the integer day counter uses floor() so partial days are dropped from the day count while remaining in the hours/minutes/seconds counters.
Can I use this calculator for legal or medical documents?
This tool is informational only. For official documents such as passports, insurance forms, school enrollment, or medical records, the issuing authority typically requires age computed in their reference calendar and timezone, which may differ from this browser-based calculation. Always cross-check with the issuing institution's required format.
Is my birth date stored or sent to a server?
No. The entire calculation runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your birth date is never transmitted over the network, never logged, never stored in cookies, and never shared with any third party. Closing or refreshing the page removes all inputs from memory. This is verifiable in your browser DevTools Network tab.
What is the 10,000-day milestone and when will I reach it?
10,000 days is approximately 27 years, 4 months, and 19 days. The calculator shows the exact calendar date you will reach 10,000 days of life and how many days remain. Other tracked milestones are 20,000 days (~54.8 years), 36,500 days (100 years), 500,000 hours (~57 years), and 1,000,000 minutes (~1.9 years). Past milestones are hidden once reached, replaced with an All milestones reached message.
Why does the years field sometimes decrease when I recalculate?
The exact years calculation handles partial years. If you recalculate just before midnight on your birthday, your exact age will tick over from N years to N+1 years at midnight. If the calculator runs at 23:59:59 vs 00:00:01 the same calendar day, the displayed age may differ by one because the date objects differ by milliseconds even though the calendar day is the same.
