Is this PDF signer really free with no signup?
Yes. There is no signup, no account, no subscription, no watermark, and no per-document fee. You draw your signature, place it on your PDF, and download the signed file. We make no money from your signing activity and never see your file.
Does my PDF or signature get uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is read locally with the File API. Your signature is drawn on a local canvas. The final signed PDF is assembled in your browser using pdf-lib and downloaded directly to your device. Open your browser DevTools Network tab while signing — you will see zero outbound document traffic.
What is the difference between an electronic signature and a digital signature?
An electronic signature is any visual mark you apply to a document to indicate acceptance — drawing, typing, or clicking a button. This tool creates electronic signatures. A digital signature is a cryptographic certificate that proves identity and detects tampering, issued by a certificate authority. This tool does not create digital signatures because that requires identity verification which we cannot perform in a browser without server-side infrastructure.
Are signatures drawn here legally binding?
In most jurisdictions, including the United States (ESIGN Act, 2000), the European Union (eIDAS Regulation, 2014), and many others, electronic signatures created by drawing are legally equivalent to handwritten signatures for the vast majority of agreements. Exceptions exist for certain documents such as wills, real estate transfers, and some court filings. Consult a lawyer if you have specific concerns about enforceability.
What file size and page count can I sign?
Up to 100MB per PDF, with any number of pages. The browser must hold the entire file in memory during processing. For very large PDFs (over 50MB), expect a few seconds of processing time while pages render. Modern phones and computers handle 100MB easily.
Can I place multiple signatures on the same PDF?
Yes. Click on any page to place the current signature. You can place the same signature on as many pages as needed. To sign with different parties (for example, a contract signed by both buyer and seller), clear and redraw the signature to change the appearance, then place it elsewhere on the document.
Will the signed PDF preserve all original content?
Yes. pdf-lib embeds the signature image and optional text labels as overlays on top of the original content without modifying the underlying pages. Text remains selectable, form fields remain interactive, and hyperlinks remain clickable.
Why not just use DocuSign or Adobe Sign?
DocuSign charges around $15 per user per month and adds envelopes, audit trails, and workflow steps you may not need for a one-off signing. Adobe Sign has a similar pricing model. This tool is for the everyday case where you have a PDF, you need to sign it, and you do not want to pay or upload your contract to a third-party cloud. For enterprise workflows with audit trails and identity verification, those services remain the appropriate choice.
Why can't AI chatbots sign my PDF?
AI chatbots do not have access to a PDF manipulation library, cannot open a local file on your device, cannot receive your signature as a drawn image, and cannot write a signed PDF back to your disk. They have no canvas to draw on, no file system to write to, and no PDF library to embed images with. This tool provides all of that in your browser, where AI cannot reach.
