Calculate Your Income Tax
How the Income Tax Calculator Works
This calculator takes your gross income, pre-tax deductions, and filing status, then walks through every line of a real tax return in deterministic order. Unlike a large language model that improvises from memory, this tool applies hardcoded brackets from authoritative sources — IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32, India Income Tax Department Union Budget 2025, UK HMRC Finance Acts.
The Tax Calculation Pipeline
- Gross Income → AGI — Subtract pre-tax deductions (401(k), HSA, salary sacrifice pension). The result is your Adjusted Gross Income.
- AGI → Taxable Income — Apply standard deduction (or itemized, if larger). The remaining amount is what the brackets operate on.
- Apply Brackets — Each jurisdiction uses progressive brackets; the calculator walks income through each band and accumulates tax.
- Credits and Rebates — Subtract tax credits (Child Tax Credit, EITC) and rebates (Section 87A in India) from the bracket-computed tax.
- Self-Employment / NI / FICA — Add any self-employment tax (US 15.3% on net earnings), UK Class 1/4 National Insurance, or US FICA.
- Take-Home Pay — Gross minus total tax liability. Divided by 12 / 26 / 52 / 365 for monthly / biweekly / weekly / daily.
Why AI Cannot Replace This Tool
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini give wrong tax answers for four reasons. First, their training data has a cutoff, so any bracket they quote is usually 1-2 years old — they will cite 2023 brackets when you ask about 2026. Second, they conflate federal and state taxes (US), central and state (India), or UK-wide and Scotland-only bands. Third, they often misapply deductions — applying the standard deduction twice, or applying the Child Tax Credit to a non-qualifying child. Fourth, they give different answers to the same question depending on prompt phrasing, which makes the result unreproducible.
This calculator encodes the actual 2026 brackets as JavaScript constants. The same input produces the same output forever. It does not hallucinate, does not guess, and does not update silently. If the IRS changes brackets for 2027, the calculator is updated to reflect the new numbers — and the year selector lets you compute against any historical year we have data for.
2026 Tax Year Highlights
United States (2026): The One Big Beautiful Bill Act made the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act rates permanent. Brackets were indexed for inflation: Single 10% up to $12,400, 12% to $50,400, 22% to $105,700, 24% to $201,775, 32% to $256,225, 35% to $640,600, 37% above. Standard deduction: Single $16,100, MFJ $32,200, HoH $24,150. Child Tax Credit: $2,200 per qualifying child.
India (FY 2025-26, AY 2026-27): The New Tax Regime (default since Budget 2024) has 7 slabs from nil (up to ₹4L) to 30% (above ₹24L). Standard deduction ₹75,000. Section 87A rebate makes income up to ₹12.75L effectively tax-free. Old Regime retains deductions under 80C (₹1.5L), 80D, HRA — useful when total deductions exceed ~₹3.75L.
United Kingdom (2026/27): Personal Allowance £12,570 (frozen since 2021/22, will remain through 2030/31). Basic rate 20% (£12,571–£50,270), Higher 40% (£50,271–£125,140), Additional 45% (above £125,140). Personal Allowance tapers £1 for every £2 over £100,000. National Insurance (Class 1 employee) main rate 8% (reduced from 12% in 2024). Scotland has different bands but same Personal Allowance and NI.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate are the tax brackets in this calculator?
All brackets are hardcoded from official sources: US 2026 brackets from IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 and Tax Foundation public tables, India FY 2025-26 from Income Tax Department notifications and Union Budget speeches, UK 2026/27 from HMRC and Low Incomes Tax Reform Group. We verify each year against the original published data before encoding.
Does this calculator handle self-employment tax?
Yes. US mode supports self-employment tax (Social Security 12.4% up to the wage base + Medicare 2.9% + Additional Medicare 0.9% above $200K single / $250K MFJ) with the deductible-half adjustment that reduces AGI. India mode shows GST considerations separately. UK mode supports Class 2 (£3.50/week if profits over £6,725) and Class 4 NI (6% on profits between £12,570–£50,270, 2% above) for Self Assessment taxpayers.
Are state taxes included for US filers?
No. This calculator computes US Federal income tax only. State income tax varies widely — 0% in Texas, Florida, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota, Tennessee, New Hampshire, Alaska, and Nevada (on wages) up to ~13.3% top marginal in California. For state-specific calculations, consult your state Department of Revenue. Federal tax is the larger of the two for most filers, and state tax can usually be estimated at 0–10% of taxable income as a rough rule.
How does the India Section 87A rebate work?
Section 87A is a refundable rebate that reduces your final tax liability to zero if your total income does not exceed ₹12.75 lakhs under the New Regime (FY 2025-26) or ₹5 lakhs under the Old Regime. It applies after standard deduction and bracket computation. So a ₹12L earner in the New Regime pays zero tax despite crossing the 10% bracket — the rebate wipes out the entire liability. Above ₹12.75L, the rebate phases out gradually.
Can I use this for UK Self Assessment?
Yes for income tax and Class 1/4 National Insurance. The calculator applies the Personal Allowance taper (£1 lost for every £2 of adjusted net income over £100,000), 20%/40%/45% rates, and Class 1 employee NI (8% main rate, 2% above UEL of £967/week). For Self Assessment, tick the self-employed box and the calculator adds Class 2 and Class 4 NI for self-employment profits. This is sufficient for most sole trader and limited company director calculations.
Why does AI give wrong tax answers?
Large language models have training cutoffs (typically January–April of a given year), so any tax bracket they quote is usually outdated. They also hallucinate bracket values for years they have no data for, confuse federal with state taxes (US) or central with state (India), miss deductions, and produce different answers to identical questions depending on prompt phrasing. Our calculator uses hardcoded data — bit-exact, reproducible, and verified annually.
Does this tool save my tax data?
No. All calculations happen in your browser. Your income, deductions, and filing status never leave your device, are never stored on any server, and are never transmitted over the internet. The only network request is the Cloudflare Web Analytics beacon (no PII, anonymous). You can verify by checking the Network tab — no fetch calls are made for tax computation.
What years are supported for historical comparison?
US: 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026 brackets. India: FY 2024-25 and FY 2025-26. UK: 2024/25, 2025/26, and 2026/27. Each year uses the actual published brackets, so switching years shows the cumulative inflation adjustments and any legislative changes (like the OBBBA making TCJA rates permanent in the US, or the New Regime being made the default in India).
How do I export the calculation for my records?
Click "Copy Results" to copy a plain-text summary to your clipboard, or "Export CSV" to download a row of values suitable for spreadsheet import (Gross, AGI, Taxable, Total Tax, Take-Home, Effective Rate, Marginal Rate, Year). Both work offline — no server round trip.
