How Live Prices Work

This tracker pulls real-time market data from the CoinGecko public API, refreshing global statistics every 5 minutes, the coin table every 2 minutes, and the trending list on each page load. Prices are sourced from hundreds of exchanges and aggregated using CoinGecko's volume-weighted methodology, which gives a more representative market price than any single exchange. Market cap is calculated as circulating supply times current price (not total supply, to avoid double-counting locked or reserved tokens), and 24-hour volume sums trade volume across all reported exchanges.

The Quick Convert widget uses the same data feed to convert between any supported coin and a fiat currency in real time, including cross-crypto conversions like BTC to ETH or SOL to USD. The detail modal shows per-coin price action over 24 hours and 7 days, market cap rank, all-time high, and all-time low. Prices update without page reloads, so traders and analysts can leave the page open and watch the market move.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are prices calculated and how fresh is the data?

Prices are aggregated from hundreds of exchanges using CoinGecko's volume-weighted methodology, which gives a single representative price per coin rather than the last-trade price on any single exchange. The global stats refresh every 5 minutes, the coin table refreshes every 2 minutes, and trending and individual coin details refresh on each page load or modal open.

What does the 24-hour percentage change mean?

The 24-hour percentage is the change in price over the last 24 hours relative to the current price, expressed as a signed percentage. Green means the price went up, red means it went down. The calculation uses the price 24 hours ago as the baseline, not the open price of the most recent trading day, so the number matches what major exchanges show in their top-bar ticker.

What is market cap and why does it not equal price times total supply?

Market cap is the total market value of a coin's circulating supply, calculated as current price times circulating supply. It excludes locked, reserved, vested, or burned tokens, so the number reflects what is actually tradeable on the open market. A coin with a low price but huge supply can have a high market cap, and a coin with a high price but tiny supply can have a low market cap. Circulating supply is sourced from CoinGecko and updated as tokens unlock.

What is BTC dominance and why does it matter?

BTC dominance is the percentage of the total cryptocurrency market cap that is Bitcoin. It is calculated as Bitcoin's market cap divided by the total market cap of all cryptocurrencies times 100. Rising BTC dominance typically means money is flowing into Bitcoin and out of altcoins; falling dominance often indicates altcoin season as capital rotates into smaller projects. The metric is one of the most-cited indicators of risk appetite across the crypto market.

Are the prices accurate enough for trading decisions?

For casual tracking, research, and portfolio monitoring, the prices shown are accurate to within a fraction of a percent of the actual market price across major exchanges. For active trading, slippage, exchange-specific liquidity, and order-book depth matter more than the aggregated price shown here. Always use the order book on your actual exchange before placing a trade, since aggregated prices can differ from executable prices by 0.1% to 1% on illiquid pairs.

Is any of my data stored or shared with anyone?

No. The tracker calls the CoinGecko public API directly from your browser using read-only public endpoints. Nothing you do on this page is sent to DevTools Hub servers, no cookies are set, no analytics are collected on which coins you view, and no search history is saved. Closing the tab erases all in-memory state.
