How This Tile Calculator Works

Enter each room with its length, width, and (for wall projects) height, plus the area of any doors or windows to subtract. The calculator converts every dimension to a common unit, multiplies length by width to get floor area or length by height to get wall area, and sums the areas across all rooms. From the total area it divides by the area of one tile, applies the pattern-specific waste factor you choose (straight 5%, brick 10%, diagonal 15%, herringbone 20%, basketweave 12%, or your own override), then rounds the result up to whole boxes based on the tiles-per-box number you enter.

The grout estimate uses a coverage formula that accounts for tile area, grout gap width, grout line length per tile, and grout density (sanded runs about 1.6 g/cc, unsanded about 1.4 g/cc). The thinset estimate multiplies total area by the coverage rate for your chosen trowel notch (1/4 x 1/4 at 0.20 lb/sq ft, 1/4 x 3/8 at 0.33 lb/sq ft, 1/2 x 1/2 at 0.45 lb/sq ft). Both round up to whole bags.

How many tiles do I need for a 10x10 room?

A 10 ft by 10 ft floor is 100 sq ft. With 12x12 inch tiles (1 sq ft each) in straight pattern at 5% waste you need 105 tiles. If tiles come 10 per box you need 11 boxes (110 tiles, 5 over). The same room in herringbone at 20% waste needs 120 tiles or 12 boxes. The calculator above handles the math and rounds boxes up automatically.

What is the right waste factor for each pattern?

Straight stack and grid patterns waste about 5% because cuts come from clean straight edges. Brick or offset patterns waste around 10% because every other row is offset and you get more partial pieces. Diagonal patterns waste 15% because the corners on every tile create more triangular offcuts. Herringbone wastes 20% because of all the angled cuts. Basketweave sits around 12%. The calculator applies the matching waste by default and lets you override it for odd-shaped rooms.

How do I convert room area to tile count?

Measure the room length and width in feet (or meters), multiply to get the floor area, then divide by the area of one tile (length times width in the same units). Add the pattern-specific waste factor and round up to whole boxes. For walls multiply wall length by wall height and subtract the area of any doors and windows. The calculator does every step including the box rounding so you can take the number straight to the store.

Should I buy extra tiles for breakage?

Yes. Even in a straight stack pattern you want at least 5% overage because tiles crack during cutting, a few will not make it through transit, and you may need spares years later when one cracks and the original color is no longer in production. Diagonal and herringbone patterns should have 15 to 20% overage. Keep the leftover tiles after the job in the garage or basement because matching dye lots years later is nearly impossible.

How much grout do I need per square foot?

Coverage depends on tile size, gap width, and grout type. A 12x12 inch tile with a 1/8 inch sanded grout line uses about 0.13 lb of grout per sq ft. A 2x2 inch mosaic with a 1/8 inch unsanded grout line uses about 0.45 lb per sq ft because the smaller tiles have more grout line per square foot. The calculator takes your tile dimensions, gap width, and grout type then outputs whole bags rounded up.

How much thinset mortar do I need per square foot?

A 1/4 inch by 3/8 inch square notch trowel uses about 0.33 lb of thinset per sq ft for 12x12 tiles. A 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch square notch uses about 0.55 lb per sq ft for large-format 18x18 or 24x24 tiles. Mosaic sheets need less, around 0.20 lb per sq ft, because they lay flatter. The calculator multiplies your area by the right coverage for the trowel notch you choose.

How do I handle odd-shaped rooms?

Split the room into rectangles. For an L-shape measure each rectangle separately and add the areas. For a T-shape or U-shape break it into 3 or 4 rectangles and add them. For a circular or curved wall use the room area in sq ft directly and ignore the curve (the cuts on a curved wall add 3 to 5% extra waste). The calculator lets you add unlimited rooms so you can model each piece of an odd shape as its own row.

Does this work in metric?

Yes. Toggle the unit switch at the top to Metric and every input switches to meters and centimeters, tile dimensions switch to millimeters, area switches to square meters, and grout and thinset switch to kilograms. The math is the same; only the units and bag sizes change. You can mix units across rooms if you have a plan drawn in metric but tiles sold in inches by entering each room in its own unit system if needed.

Is my project data private?

Yes. Everything runs in your browser using JavaScript. No room dimensions, tile sizes, or costs are sent to any server. Close the tab and your last project is gone. The only data persisted is the last project in localStorage so the form reloads when you come back. There is no account, no email capture, no analytics tied to your project.
